Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Big Walk?
-
Big Walk is a videogame about talking to your friends.
It is both a big adventure, and a nice place to hang out.
- When will Big Walk release?
-
Big Walk will release on August 4th, 2026.
- Where can I play Big Walk?
-
It’s coming to Windows and Mac (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Players
- How many people can play?
-
Two or more players, with a maximum of 12.
- Does the game work differently with different numbers of players?
-
A little bit, yes. Each time the host starts a session, they choose a 2 player, 3 player or 4+ player version of the world. Some things in the world change to adapt to each of these choices.
You should think of this number as the minimum number of players who will be participating, rather than the maximum. If some players won’t be joining for your whole session, it might be better to pick a lower number.
- What’s the ideal number of players?
-
Any number in that range is good! We didn’t make the game with a specific number of players in mind.
With fewer players the game is a more focused co-op experience. Once you get closer to 12 it’s more of a fun, chaotic mess. But it’ll be good no matter how many people you’re playing with.
- Is there a single-player mode?
-
No, sorry. Big Walk is entirely about teamwork and talking. Everything you do in the game is designed for cooperative multiplayer. (You could start a game and walk around a little bit as a single player, but you won’t get very far.)
- Will there be online matchmaking?
-
No.
Big Walk is a long-form cooperative game. It’s made to be played with the same group over multiple sessions, so it doesn’t make sense to throw strangers together randomly. We think it’s a much better experience to organize and play Big Walk with people you know — or people you want to know better.
- Can people on different systems play together?
-
Sure! Big Walk has crossplay support, so players on different systems can play together.
Playing the Game
- Can I use a mouse and keyboard? A game controller?
-
Both will work well.
The computer version of the game supports most game controllers. And we even support the mouse mode of the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Do I need to save my progress?
-
The game saves your progress automatically.
- How does hosting work?
-
Basically, the host is the keeper of the save game.
That means your host will need to start playing first. Once they start a session, the other players can then connect to it. When the host stops the session, all other players will be disconnected. If you want to continue your journey where you left off last time, you’ll need your host again.
- How do I connect to my friend’s game?
-
- If you have your friend on the friends list on the platform where you are playing the game (like Steam or your console), your friend’s game will automatically appear in a menu of friend’s games.
- If you aren’t friends on your platform’s friends list, you can join with a Join Code. A Join Code is a short, unique code that is generated every time the host starts a session. The host can then share the code outside of the game for the other players to use to join.
- Does Big Walk have an “ending”?
-
Yes! Big Walk is a hand-crafted cooperative adventure meant to be played start-to-finish with a group of friends. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. That said, it’s also a nice place to hang out, and you can jump in any time you feel like taking a big walk for its own sake.
In-Game Chat
- How do I talk to people in Big Walk?
-
Big Walk has in-game voice chat, and in-game text chat.
Feel free to use either, or a mixture of voice and text chat in whatever way works best for you.
- Can I play without using a microphone?
-
Yes! Big Walk’s in-game text chat system has the same features and restrictions as the in-game voice chat. So you can play the whole game that way without missing out.
For example, your text chat won’t be readable when you are far away, or on opposite sides of soundproof glass! And your text chat will work with in-game items like walkie talkies.
- Can I talk to other players in ways separate to the in-game chat (like using other programs)?
-
NO! NO WAY.
Talking to players outside the game is ❌ NOT ALLOWED ❌
(Where possible we would also recommend not playing in the same physical room as other players, so that you won’t hear each other in person either.)
- Wait, why?
-
Big Walk puts you into situations where the in-game chat enables or restricts communication in different, and interesting, ways. For example, you might find yourself in a situation where you can’t hear each other, and you need to find other ways to communicate.
We know that in some games in-game chat is an optional extra layer, and the game is still fun without using it. But in Big Walk, restricted voice chat is the key to what makes the game fun!
- What will happen if I talk outside the game anyway?
-
If you decide to cheat and talk outside the game, the game won’t stop running or punish you, but you’ll miss out on the most interesting parts of the game. Also, parts of the game won’t really make sense, and it might even become a bit boring! It’d be like playing charades but everybody gets to talk.
Trust us — talking in-game is what makes Big Walk special.
